GLOSSARY

Psycholytic

DEFINITION

Psycholytic refers to a specific type of therapy in which low doses of psychedelic drugs are given repeatedly at short intervals over a period of one to two weeks in an effort to get a steady state of psychedelic drugs in the system at a relatively low level. Typically, a clinician is present when the largest dose is given to ensure the patient has assistance in processing the effects of the therapy. The original belief behind the therapy was that it could dissolve negative thoughts and issues in the mind. Then, with genuine psychotherapy, the treatment of mental health issues could be more successful. This type of therapy used to be practiced regularly in Europe and the United States.
