GLOSSARY

Mapacho (Nicotiana rustica)

DEFINITION

Mapacho is a plant that grows in the rainforest. The scientific name is Nicotiana Rustica, and it is commonly called Aztec tobacco. This is a particularly potent type of tobacco, and it contains as much as nine times more nicotine than common tobacco. Because this plant has a high concentration of nicotine, it is particularly useful in producing pesticides. In South America, the plant is commonly used as an entheogen, meaning it is incorporated in religious ceremonies. These ceremonies are frequently supervised by shamans and other religious officials.
