Phenethylamines

DEFINITION

A phenethylamine, usually shortened to PEA, is an organic compound that stimulates the central nervous system. It controls the release of monoamine neurotransmitters by binding to the TAAR 1 receptor while inhibiting the VMAT 2 transporter. This type of compound is frequently used as a dietary supplement for weight loss and mood regulation. This chemical class of compound is frequently found in over-the-counter and prescription drugs such as decongestants, antidepressants, and bronchodilators. This type of compound can also be used recreationally as a stimulant, psychedelic, and empathogen. Examples of popular phenethylamines include MDMA and mescaline.
