GLOSSARY

Psychedelic Phenethylamines

DEFINITION

Psychedelic phenethylamines are compounds that have the chemical structure of a phenethylamine and have psychedelic effects. The most common example of this type of compound is mescaline. Some phenethylamines occur naturally in nature, while others are synthesized in a laboratory. These compounds work by influencing the transmission of neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and dopamine. The experiences associated with these types of compounds can vary markedly from person to person, with some people stating that they have spiritual or transcendental experiences when they take psychedelic phenethylamines. Some of these compounds are even used in religious ceremonies. Specifically, mescaline binds to 5 HT2A and 5 H2TC receptors.
